Have you ever suddenly remembered a memory from long ago? Do you sometimes find it hard to remember things that happen just a few hours ago?

The human brain is extremely interesting. Multiple strategies exist for the brain to passively store and retain knowledge. The brain is like a huge memory bank that stores everything that ever happens to you with a seemingly unlimited capacity. Someone often stores up events and other experiences from the past for years until they find that moment again.  That’s why with hypnosis people are able to remember past events from years ago, which they may have though they had forgotten. The subconscious mind is basically the unconscious mind, working in the background.

Understanding the Subconscious Mind

In order to find that moment again, people frequently store events and other experiences from the past for years. According the famous theories and structures that Freud talked about the subconscious includes the part of our brain that makes decisions without actively thinking much about it and makes up about 95% of our brain. The unconditional mind, also referred to as the subconscious mind and operates on the morality principle. The subconscious mind rewards and punishes us and this way also reinforces thee way we think, act and behave in our daily lives. The subconscious mind directs the majority of our thoughts and therefore we tend to often think Feel and act based on our emotions. The reinforcement impacts our choices and decisions in life and in this way also creates a path that we follow in our life.

Exploring the Depths

In addition to the real emotions, feelings, and thoughts that a person experiences, the subconscious mind also exercises control over involuntary bodily functions like breathing and digesting. this can include all sorts of thoughts about topics that do not match up to society and can be considered as unwanted thoughts and beliefs that are extremely controversial and should not be acted out. The subconscious includes the person’s hidden sexual thoughts and aggression. it also holds a lot of memory from the time long gone which one may completely forget about until someone brings it up.

This is where people tend to store their trauma at times. As we all know, sometimes when something extremely traumatic happens, people at times tend to completely forget the incident, but honestly, we don’t really forget it and it just becomes a part of the subconscious. Unlike the conscious, we can not actively recall memories from the subconscious with ease as it contains of mostly the long-term memories and also includes thoughts and beliefs that may contradict with that of their conscious thoughts and beliefs.

Psychoanalysis and the Subconscious Mind

The subconscious mind basically sits in the background and absorbs everything that a person goes through. It’s like a gate that one can enter easily, but leaving is hard and therefore it is not easy for us to recall memories of the past and also because of this we often tend to think that we have forgotten. the subconscious mind works despite being like a gate that does its best to prevent memories to trickle into the conscious also plays a huge part in other functions of the body. The subconscious works on the involuntary movements of the body which includes breathing. And as we know without breathing we can not survive, therefore we can also say that without the subconscious we will not be able to go on.

Sigmund Freud’s famous iceberg theory explains in great detail about the different consciousness and one can look that up to understand the concept better. The psychoanalysis technique which was introduced by Freud is also based on the iceberg technique and seeks to bring the unconscious to the conscious in order to help the person involved.

Unearthing Forgotten Memories

The subconscious thoughts include the various thoughts that one may not readily remember and also includes the memories of the past which we may assume that we have forgotten. Subconscious works efficiently in the background and plays a huge role in the functioning of our day-to-day lives. The subconscious also includes thoughts and behaviors that may not be in sync with that of the conscious and therefore are not acted upon. There are multiple ways inn which the subconscious plays a role in shaping the way we and our life turn out to be.

Each one of us has listened to or got to know about the word ‘Dignity’ once in our life. This word weighs heavily and is of great importance. As the concept of humanity is a broad and multifaceted, idea that encompasses the qualities, nature, and characteristics of human beings. We all are aware of this term as it is used much in our workplace, home, and different areas of living. Every individual possesses some worth and respect and each one of them has the expectation of getting respected and recognized by society.

Everything related to humans is considered important and the concept of dignity revolves around the human species. We have renowned human beings who are highly dignified in their respective fields and are well-known in the entire world. It is because the values they get as values and dignity are positively correlated the more positive values the more highly dignified is the individual.

Dignity and Rights in India

India is a country where the rights of every being is considered important and making sure to uphold these rights and providing them with the necessary benefits upholds one dignity. It is also termed as self-respect of an individual. Keeping the privacy of a person in the healthcare system will uphold their dignity as the practitioners and doctors are respecting their privacy. Similarly, the psychologist respects the dignity of their clients. The connection between law and dignity strikes many as socially and morally urgent. It is thus unsurprising that some serious historical connection already exists. As both equally is essential for a dignified life.
The concept of dignity is often described as an elusive concept. Many philosophers have taken it upon themselves to articulate the exact meaning of dignity, and they have proposed several definitions and terms for it. Two notions of dignity seem to emerge, Dignity as respect for humanity and dignity as a respect for autonomy.

Dignity as respect for humanity:

Immanuel Kant was the philosopher, who put dignity and respect for people as the central moral theory. Kant describes human dignity as a supreme value that all human possesses in the virtue of humanity. Dignity as respect for humanity includes treating everyone with kindness, compassion, and fairness regarding race, ethnicity, sexual orientation socio-economic, or any other factor. It is just recognising one’s inherent worth and value. For example, A doctor treats homeless kids with the same care he treats his wealthy patients. Another example of this can be a community member standing against harassment or disrespect.

Dignity as a respect for autonomy:

It is the strong notion between humanity and autonomy, that gave rise to the second important aspect of dignity and respect for autonomy. Dignity as the respect for autonomy means that an individual has the right to make their own choices and can control their life. It is about being able to live up one’s life with the value one owns even if someone disagrees or not. An example of dignity as a respect for autonomy can be the right to informed consent of medical care which means patients have all the rights to know what medical options and care they are having and what are the alternatives for this.

In this case, doctors and nurses are required to treat their patients with utmost respect. In a relationship, both partners individually have the right to make their own decisions about their relationship, whether to have a child or to get married.

Important Aspects of Dignity

1. Respect:

Respect is an important aspect of dignity. Treating everyone with respect is considered an important ethical value. It means acknowledging their humanity, individuality, and unique qualities. It involves listening to their perspectives, listening to others’ opinions, and respecting their rights. As if a person is speaking, listening properly to their views will uphold his or her dignity. Even respect for older people or person with high respect will uphold their dignity and make them feel superior.

2. Equality:

Dignity is closely linked with the respect of equality. All individuals should be treated equally and they should be given choices. As a society sees equality as important minority groups might still have the feeling of discrimination. But equality is the key aspect to making a person feel dignified in society. The right to Equality is an essential right in the constitution of India and thus it weighs heavily on a person and society. Treating everyone equally and making them feel good about their genders can make one life a dignified life.

3. Autonomy:

As discussed earlier autonomy is the belief that everyone should make their own decisions about their own lives and respect their choices, even if the choices differ from others. It can be in the form of religious groups, one can have different beliefs about different religions, and that their opinions should be respected. It can also be in the form of choosing different identities. People’s choices matter in society and thus this makes one a dignified individual of society.

4. Privacy:

Privacy is another important aspect of dignity. If a person trusts you and tells you something it is important to keep their privacy. And keeping someone’s privacy makes an individual dignified as they tell with trust. For example, leaders in different prominent fields always keep their lives private. They keep their life to themselves only. The invasion in their privacy is considered a component that positively and negatively influences their dignity.

5. Basic Needs:

Basic needs are important for an individual to live and sustain on Mother Earth and having all these basic needs determine one’s dignity having proper food, and shelter makes one a dignified individual, and limitations to these basic needs can undermine one’s dignity. It can also be seen as the baseline of dignity as people do see the basic needs of individuals. It can also be basic human rights.

Thus, dignity is an important aspect of human life. Having it makes one honorable and respectable in society. Making one feel dignified is the main aspect of living a good life. It’s a concept that underlies the idea that all individuals should be treated with decency, fairness, and without discrimination.

‘Don’t define your world in black and white, because there is so much hiding among the grays.’

The world is made up of opposites. Like hot-cold, sweet-sour, male-females and the list keeps on going and these dualities are most clearly divided at the broad extremes. But life is not always about black and white but about grey. Black and white are seen as the comfort zone and grey a danger zone. This is because the society never taught us that it’s fine to possess the qualities of grey and have grey areas in the life. What we believe and affirm to is that day is with light and the night is without light.

But, there are those in-between times called dusk and dawn where it is quite difficult to say if it is actually a day or a night. Whenever the sun goes down do you officially call it evening? When before the sun breaks the skyline do you call it daytime? These are unsettled focuses in the world to the majority of us however that show there are grey areas even in our physical world that we can only see when we connect with our restricting qualities and nature.

If you are ever in a state where you are dealing with any grey areas no matter where you are with your grey areas you should always remember that you are not so far that you can’t figure it out and it’s never too late for the things to settle down. You do not need to be labelled or feel broken because of the fact that you’re dealing with some stuff or problem in your life that is creating hindrances.

Everything takes its own time, and things will fall into place.

We all possess a choice about what we can control and what all we cannot. Exercise upon the action of what we know is right to do as per our knowledge. That is the biggest asset we all have in our lives when it comes to the grey areas. It’s very easy for us to label something as good or bad so we carry on to do so without giving a thought about it and figuring out that what it really is.

Thinking in extremes can cause more negativity in our lives It’s okay to feel your feelings, we all are meant to feel different emotions as humans. Hiding behind the mask or bearing the blinders only keeps the problems alive in your life and we won’t be able to overcome it if we will certain the same thinking.

The way we can overcome our grey areas is through self-acceptance

Acceptance plays a very important role in our lives. Accept that life is not a mathematics equation, where either the answer would be right or wrong but rather it is an adventurous journey, which will include both good and bad times. Accept that your life is not going to be the same as your cousins, or neighbours, or friends and or any other people. You will have your own joys and sorrows of life.

self-acceptance

Accept that there will be times when you have to choose among things, and there will be times when you will have the clutter of problems but all you should remember throughout this is that accepting the present and working for a better future will help you sail through everything. Ultimately you will glow out of your problems. Life will give you both the happy and the sad challenges.

The biggest acceptance which we have to make is that life is lived in shades of gray.

What would you feel if you found out that there exists a mental disorder that causes the affected person to live in extreme squalor?

Diogenes syndrome or senile squalor syndrome consists of the person living in seriously unhygienic surroundings with extreme signs of self-neglect, personal hygiene, and isolation from society. They may also engage in extreme levels of hoarding and some of the affected people may display signs of catatonia. The name Diogenes syndrome is derived from the Greek philosopher Diogenes who was believed to be found living in a barrel. But historians quote him to be a minimalist who never showed any signs of extreme hoarding or unhygienic living.

Thus, this can be considered as an example of a misnomer. Diogenes syndrome is identified not as a specific disease, hence lacking actual recognition as a mental health disorder from ICD and DSM-5 to date. It is a neurobehavioral syndrome, nonetheless, necessitating a clinical diagnosis and treatments. The understanding of this illness is to date not fully developed. Although doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, and others have been aware of it for several decades, little research has been done on the disorder’s symptoms or underlying causes. While the diagnosis of neurobehavioral illness has been made and verified, the precise relationship between the symptoms presented by the affected person and their neurological health or foundations has not yet been fully determined and tested by science.

Symptoms:

Some of the commonly displayed symptoms that can be identified to mark the onset or the existence of Diogenes’ syndrome are:

  • Rashes on the skin due to infestation of lice or pests
  • Unkempt hair
  • Malnutrition
  • Serious Dehydration
  • Body odour
  • Extreme levels of hoarding
  • Unhygienic surroundings
  • Unkempt and filthy home environment
  • Lack of shame about the filth
  • Hesitation to take help or medical support
  • High levels of self-neglect
Causes:

Diogenes syndrome can be divided into 2 categories: primary and secondary. Primary Diogenes syndrome can be defined as one that does not occur simultaneous to the onset of any other mental disorders while the latter’s diagnosis is coupled with that of any other mental disorder. Both categories account for about 50% of the diagnosed cases in the case registry.

Diogenes syndrome can also be triggered in an individual due to some personal tragedies or major life changes. Loss of a parent, spouse or any loved one in one’s life, and even major changes in one’s life like retirement or divorce can trigger these symptoms and can cause the affected person to lead a socially isolated life and develop hoarding symptoms. Medical conditions like stroke, arthritis, mobility problems, depression, substance abuse, dementia, etc. may also serve as risk factors that can kickstart the onset of the mentioned symptoms. Since the disorder is not yet classified as a major mental illness, the above-mentioned symptoms, since they also commonly belong to other mental illnesses like compulsive hoarding or even schizophrenia, are mostly checked and diagnosed for these disorders rather than exclusively for Diogenes’ disorder. As a result, Diogenes’ disorder is viewed as a collection of symptoms rather than a singular, unique condition.

Treatment

Since most people affected and suffering from extreme levels of disorders may be indifferent to the idea of treatment or medical support or maybe even hesitant about seeking professional help, treating this bunch of people can never be an easy task. Living in such filthy and unhygienic conditions can not only bring huge turmoil to the mental and emotional health, it can also put them at risk of developing physical illnesses that could turn life-threatening. The development or onset of any resultant physical illnesses must be initially done to ensure that their bodily processes are not affected. If there exists any such discrepancy, it should be ensured that those are cleared first with adequate treatment.

If they are found to be stable and capable enough to follow these instructions by themselves, behavioural therapies can be suggested and implemented. Since most of these patients may also develop anxiety and even depression along with these problematic symptoms, treatment methods should be inclusive to treat these as well. They must be suggested to receive inpatient treatment for effective recovery. They can also be suggested or referred to take part in group therapy or support groups as this may help them cope with social situations especially when they suffer from social isolation and self-neglect symptoms.

Existing Literature

Even though there exists a huge dearth of scientific research pointing towards the actual root causes of the disorder and its biological groundwork, some recent publications can help us delve deep into the possible precautions or lifestyle changes one should undertake to avoid falling prey to the disorder. The Hoarder in You: How to Live a Happier, Healthier, Uncluttered Life is a book written by Dr Robin Zasio in November 2012. Dr. Zasio is a psychologist whose major area of study and intervention remains hoarding disorders. The book explains various useful tips and techniques to curb hoarding tendencies and goes into additional detail on how to manage compulsive feelings that lead to the hoarding of needless items. This advice and strategies can be implemented when one is found to slip into the disorder as they are relevant to hoarding habits and self-neglect symptoms exhibited during the disorder.

When a person feels overwhelmed, anxious, or stressed, they usually get suggestions or advice from their support system and people around them to live in the present, reducing the pressure on their mind. In a way, they are asking the person to do their best in the present moment and not think about their past or future. As a person can’t change the past or write their future, what they can do is only working in the present to reduce past impressions of life or plant productive seeds for the future in the present. But have you ever thought about what will happen when a person starts living in the present? How will it affect their lives?

What does living in the present refer to?

Living in the present refers to being actively engaged in your present moment. Living your life consciously and believing in each moment you breathe is a gift. It allows the person to experience life fully. It makes the person feel more joy, happiness, and gratitude. In general, it affects our life positivity. Here, one thing that is also very important to understand is that living in the present and being mindful are two different things.

The difference between living in the present and mindfulness: mindfulness in a state of meta-awareness, allows the person to experience life with full acceptance of themselves and their environment without judgment. This state can be experienced through meditation. Mindfulness without being present is not possible. But it does not mean they both (mindfulness and living in the present) are the same. They are similar. When a person lives in the present, they judge their situation and surroundings and mostly act on present thoughts, not considering the future consequences. It can be said that living in the present is the foundation state, and mindfulness is a higher state of human consciousness.

Pros of living in the present

1) Improvement in productivity:

When people focus on the present, they save their energy by not being occupied by past memories and future worries. It helps the person get fully engaged in the present moment and work on the positive possibilities of the present moment. Because of this, this person’s performance gets better once they become habitual about living in the present. Their sustained attention becomes better, and they also develop tolerance for distractions.

2) Reduced stress:

When people think only about the present, they free themselves from fear, worry, and past and future insecurities. They become more relaxed as they are not considering their future uncertainty while talking. Past regrets and future uncertainty are what make us feel more vulnerable to stress. When these two factors come under the control of people, they feel less stress.

3) Better relationship:

When people live in the present, they do not consider past bad memories in their relationship. They bring a new change to the relationship. In relationships, people are often thinking about why people do this, why he said this, and what they are willing to get from them, and they become preoccupied by contact thoughts, which do not allow them to have meaningful relationships. Whereas when people live in the present, they focus on what is happening now and hence save their relationship from overthinking, predictions, and unnecessary judgments.

4) Become more creative:

living is present and allows the person to think creatively. As they are more focused on the task or activities they are performing, they can invest more energy in their imagination and try something creative. They are able to make maximum use of their resources and work for better outcomes. A relaxed mind is the major reason for a person being creative.

5) Better social skills:

When people are living in the present, they become good listeners and attend to the person who is speaking with full effort. Which makes them better in their social relationships. Everyone wants to listen carefully, and when they get it, they often like that person who listens to them patiently without interrupting them.

Cons of always living in the present

Extremes in anything are harmful. When people live in the present, sometimes they fall into trouble as well.

1) Blindness to future consequences:

When people function almost always in the present, they sometimes overlook future consequences or their present joy or happiness. And when they realize that they have already contributed to a future problem, they feel sorry for what they have done. They were asked to live in the present, and that’s what they are getting in return? The answer to this is that while a person is living in the present, they should also understand that there is no one simple master key to solving all the problems in their life.

Also Read: Father of Psychoanalysis: A Deep Dive into the Life of Sigmund Freud

In life, sometimes people have to consider future consequences while taking action in the present. For example, if a person feels I have a good balance to go for travel and he goes for travel by leaving his or her job, do you think this sudden difficulty will not affect his or her life in the future?

2) Action on impulse:

When people are in the habit of living in the present and any problem arises, it becomes very difficult for them to overlook such situations, as they are now in the practice of sustained attention and can’t ignore the situation that is bothering them. They sometimes in such situations act on impulse as they forget that this present situation will also change in future. “Time changes,” they forget; they are focusing on living in time.

3) No planning:

They believe so much in living in the present and spontaneity that they see the importance of planning. How can it be possible to plan for the future when everything is guided by the present? Because they are not planning, they can fall miserably when taking decisions for long-term goals. Planning and spontaneity are both important and should be used wisely.

4) Difficulty in handling challenging situations in the present:

Imagine a person living in the present encountering any intense negative situation in their life. How do you think they will react? It’s possible that they become very intensely affected by it, as their focus is only on the present. This can affect them badly, as they are not calculating the future possibilities while experiencing their challenge.

Immediate pleasure vs. long-term reward

Whenever people take any action or decision, they must first consider their immediate action and long-term consequences. For example, when a person is going to buy a house, choose a job, or study any subject, they have to consider their future scope and possibilities as well. Life’s every decision cannot be taken based on the philosophy of present moments. They have to consider future rewards when they are planning for any long-term goal.

Equilibrium between the past, present, and future

The best way to live life is to live it flexibly between the past, present, and future. Consider your past learning while taking actions in the present, and live fully in the present only when it does not plant seeds for future suffering. Make a healthy balance between your positive future possibilities, pleasure in the present, and lessons from the past. It’s not easy. To live a life like this, a person has to live on their conscience. But once you learn it, you will realize that life is unpredictable and there is no master key to walking on it. Equilibrium between all elements is the ultimate solution.

If you are walking on the path of living in the present, beware of its cons and make a healthy balance between the past, present, and future. It’s good news for you if you are already walking on the path of living in the present, as you are in the foundation step of mindfulness. Each choice of a human’s actions comes with a good or bad experience, and you just don’t have to leave the path as it has some disadvantages. Life is about walking on a path until you do not achieve what you desire. So keep walking and remember that everything happens for a reason.

This one life’ everything happens for a reason’ will guide you to accept yourself and your surroundings without judging them and become a more mindful person. We are all learning in life, and there is no comparison between the learning of two individuals as their destinations are different.

Giving up something you enjoy for something bigger that would do you good is what is meant by sacrifice—letting go of whatever you are holding onto or to which you are emotionally attached. Strength comes from sacrifice in life. Life is stagnate without sacrifice. You can ascend to a higher platform through sacrifices.

People frequently believe that giving up something for something else makes life boring and joyless. In reality, sacrifice is what makes life worthwhile. Your level of sacrifice in life brings out your generosity and aids in your quest to find happiness. A life without sacrifice has no value. All of zeal, excitement, strength, and joy are products of sacrifice. “I have sacrificed so much,” some people whine. I like that. They have the energy to gripe because of the prospect of sacrifice! This keeps them from blaming themselves, which would make them more depressed. No sacrifice is ever in vain. Without sacrifice, love, wisdom, and real joy are not possible. Being sacrificed for elevates one. To become revered.

Ultimate Eternal Truth of Life = Death

Some people continue to exist after death because “we live in deeds, not in years”; longevity is determined by the good deeds a person performs throughout their life, not by how many years they live. Human life has a finite shelf life and is given to us by the All-Powerful (SWT). The ultimate eternal truth is death.
Our lives are pointless if we are unable to improve the lives of others. Even if a selfish person may live a long life, after death no one will ever remember them. He is most likely remembered for his selfish traits and vices if anyone at all does. Our lives should be built on good deeds and qualities.

The apparent loss of something worthwhile is frequently connected to the meaning of the word “sacrifice.” For the sake of the enjoyment and safety of others, one may sacrifice their time, labor, income, desires, happiness, or even their life. The actual value of sacrifices might not become apparent to the one doing it until the sacrifice’s results are seen or manifested. Making sacrifices is a need if we are to get what we truly want out of life.

Helping Underprivileged Children

Some of the good deeds that one can perform on a daily basis include being nice and courteous to others, providing for the needy, contributing to the education of underprivileged children, etc. Selfless acts, gestures, and deeds abound throughout human life. To maximize the value of the priceless gift of life, we must all work hard. We should always keep in mind that a single hectic hour of a magnificent life is worth more than a whole year without performing a kind deed.

Sometimes when we give up something valuable, we don’t actually lose it. Simply transfer it to another party. We wouldn’t have anything if not for suffering and sacrifice. But holiness and pain are not antagonistic. In other words, being holy does not guarantee that you will not experience hardship. You will, however, see a transformation in your pain. Consider the person of Jesus Himself. He was ideal. He had the most suffering, nevertheless. Although our Prophet Muhammad (SM) was the greatest human ever, he endured unimaginable hardship. Suffering is an inherent element of radical living in a fallen world, not proof of God’s displeasure.

Power of Sacrifice

We frequently consider ourselves lucky to have life. Each of us has distinct goals for the best life we can lead, yet despite this, we waste a lot of time on things that aren’t helpful in achieving these goals. The type of success one might have in achieving a goal depends on what we do with our leisure time.

Some Examples of Successful Personalities

Think about figures like Bill Gates. When Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, or anyone else who has reached the pinnacle of success eventually receives their highest honors, they frequently discuss in their speeches what they were ready to give up in order to realize their aspirations or how much the people around them had to sacrifice. Everyone has a story of giving up something they wanted to do to accomplish something they felt they had to. The majority of this sacrifice is related to how they spend their free time. Time is at the heart of sacrifice. One can make time work in their favor by making sacrifices for something that will benefit them in the end.

The beauty of sacrifice is that it only lasts for a short time. In order to achieve your goals, you must make short-term sacrifices in favor of more significant ones. In fact, one can lengthen their longevity by doing this. Perhaps not actual time, but free time. Instead of wasting their free time on pointless activities that don’t genuinely benefit them, they use them to work toward a worthwhile and satisfying objective. They will not have to worry about working a nine-to-five job to make ends meet when they achieve the height of achievement early in their lives in this way.

Money’s Grip on Society

It is clear that money rules our society when we consider the relationship between the amount of time we have in our lifespan and the amount of leisure time we have. That the world in which we live, where money is the primary motivator for people, is the only one in which this style of thinking makes sense. Without money, there would be no currency. What would inspire us? Surviving? Could there be a world without sacrifice that is better for each person? Without a system of money, the ancient Andeans survived and prospered. According to economists, there will undoubtedly be inefficiencies without a currency, yet the Andean people only experienced excess inefficiencies. They operated in an economy that served the greater good more effectively. They discovered that they might be most effective when they collaborated.

One of the most effective non-pharmacological therapies for lowering stress and anxiety is laughter therapy. Laughter has been utilized since ancient times to strengthen and maintain healthy relationships in the social, psychological, and physical domains by influencing cognitive behaviour. Laughing can excite a variety of organs. Laughter boosts the amount of oxygen-rich air you breathe in, stimulates your heart, lungs, and muscles, and causes your brain to create more endorphins. In both group and individual sessions, laughter therapy seeks to make individuals laugh. It can also help people feel less stressed, happier, and more devoted at work, as well as enhance their interpersonal skills.

Laughter releases a burst of stress-relieving endorphins and gives your muscles a full-body exercise. Anything that makes you laugh will make you feel good since our bodies are incapable of telling the difference between genuine and artificial laughing. It’s not necessary to be cheerful or humorous to gain from a good laugh.

Laughing Yoga: Essential Skills

Laughter is a physical act, not mental or emotional. There are four components to Laughter Yoga:

  • Clapping together with “ho-ho-ha-ha-ha” in time.
  • Inhaling and extending.
  • Play like a child.
  • Laughing activities.

Participating in a laughter class releases endorphins, which makes you feel good since your entire body relaxes and tension and stress are released. You have an aerobic workout as well. Laughter strengthens your muscles, enhances breathing, and strengthens your immune system, all of which help you fend off illness. The ability to facilitate a laughter yoga course is simply acquired. It has been demonstrated to have good, measurable psychological and psychological benefits on some elements of health. The following categories apply to therapeutic laughing, which can be utilized in mental health as a complementary or alternative approach to other recognized treatments or with the goal of preventive mental health (lifestyle medicine):

  1. Laughing without planning.
  2. Humor imitating.

To reap the full range of health advantages, the primary goal of modern laughter therapy is to experience binomial simulated spontaneous laughter. Based on the understanding that the body cannot discriminate between spontaneous and artificial laughter, simulated laughter is said to have similar health effects. In any case, results about health are generated. Laughing in a virtual environment has the potential to increase the dosage of laughter—that is, to laugh longer and harder at will—and thus, improve one’s health. Like any other therapeutic tactic, the effective use of simulated laughing (and other laughter strategies) for mental health needs to be learned, practised and improved. Thus, therapeutic simulated laughter is a contemporary strategy whose cornerstones are as follows:

Compared to other laughter interventions, laughter experience is based on well-defined methodologies, so that clinical practice variability is reduced. secure, simple to use, and share. It makes you happy and doesn’t need any thought. It is infectious and readily transforms into uncontrollable giggles when shared with others. It enables the entire therapeutic laughing experience at the right intensity and duration. Various exercises are included in every step of laughter sessions as part of simulated laughter techniques.

There is an almost limitless collection of simulated laughter exercises available. Techniques for simulating laughing are inexpensive and simple to apply in therapeutic settings for mental health issues. It seems that the most realistic, long-lasting, and broadly applicable laughter intervention for use in clinical practice and future laughter research is therapeutic simulated laughter, which is doable.

The Humor Advantage: Why Some Businesses Are Laughing All the Way to the Bank by Michael Kerr Motivate staff members and convert clients into ardent, devoted followers! The Humor-edged Novel highlights companies worldwide that have used humour to develop a competitive edge in their brand. Filled with suggestions on how you, your group, and your company as a whole may use comedy to your advantage in any kind of workplace or corporation, this is a guide for developing a motivating workplace culture that can propel any enterprise to extraordinary heights.

The book can make any team, boss, worker, or organization laugh until they cry, the book offers advice on how to brand your company to draw in employees, hire with humour, create a tribal culture that makes people laugh, inspire workers, recognize their accomplishments, and celebrate teamwork. It also covers how to make workplace messages contagious and improve communication, how humour can spur creativity and innovation at work, how humour reduces stress at work, how humour can help you brand your company to draw in customers, and how humour can help you convert long- time clients into ardent supporters. The classic book on workplace comedy, The Comedy Advantage is a fun read that will make any team, employee, leader, or company giggle uncontrollably.

Laughter: A Scientific Investigation by Robert R. Provine Despite being universal and peculiarly human, laughter is nevertheless a mystery of neurology, society, and development. Philosophical conjecture regarding its humorous catalysts and metaphysical objectives has undoubtedly been abundant, but no one has hitherto taken the trouble to precisely characterize its fundamental phenomenology or behavioural clues. What basic sounds make someone laugh? Apart from comedy clubs, how and why is it produced, and where and when is it mainly heard? Because the subject is a reasonably stereotypical and repeatable activity that is easily produced by a variety of social and environmental triggers, it has long been ripe for such juicy scientific investigation and observational harvesting. It’s funny that nobody has volunteered for the work thus far; it’s almost absurd.

Summing up

We all know that laughter only produces good things, thus it’s the finest therapy there is. Laughter has the power to transform your life and make you a better person. It can help you with a lot of life’s ailments. Laughing naturally reduces pain and improves happiness. In the end, it makes us feel better and have more energy while also enhancing our health and vital signs. The greatest method to live a joyful life free from worry, despair, and anxiety is to laugh. It enhances both our mental and physical well-being. It improves interpersonal interactions and elevates our spirits. Youngsters laugh a lot because they are content and worry-free.

‘Really down-to-earth person’ This statement carries a lot of weight. It refers to a person who, while attaining success in life, maintained their moral standards as well as their attitude and personality. Such individuals are frequently referred to as humble since they do not take pride in themselves or believe they are superior to others. They see themselves as regular people with normal attitudes just like any other person. There are a lot of prosperous people in the world who maintain a very modest demeanor and lead ordinary lives.

As it has seen people do change according to their status, they are given in society some higher authority people forge and present their false personality. The person who gets success and change is expected to be higher in society and be a role model for other people and on the other is the person who despite being extremely successful never changes. It shows the distinction between the two types of individual, one who sees only themselves and their pleasures and the other who puts others first and accepts their mistakes and works on them. In this world of forged and false personalities, humbleness is harder to find.

  • Respectful to others: Even if they disagree with someone’s word, they disagree in a way that is quite respectful and not demeaning to the other person.
How do others perceive a humble person?

Humble people are generally perceived positively by others. Humbleness is often a single factor on which others may show a feeling of likeability towards others. They are seen as a respectful member of any society just because they are fair and always supports good. They can also easily gain the trust of others. What do you do as you wake up? Do you make your bed the moment you get up? do you wash your face or do you greet your pet?

Everyone has different ways in which their day folds out. There are various people who wake up each morning at the same time. Do the same things they do every day. While there are also other who wake up at no set time. They do not have any particular order in which they carry out their duties. Although different people work differently and what may work for one person need not necessarily work for someone else. It is important to realise the benefits of having a routine life .

Following a routine is important?

A routine is when we do the same things of things, again and again, every day. It is important to have a routine of sorts in your daily life. As it adds stability to ones day and life. There are many people who may seem to have no routine whatsoever and they don’t necessarily face any problems. However, they too have a routine of sorts. Everyone’s routine looks different. One could have a defined morning routine that includes making their bed first, going to the toilet next, etc. While on the other hand, for someone else routine might be to wake up and feed their pet before cooking for themselves. The routines people follow does not need to make sense to others. But it should be something that works for them.

Often when people undergo a range of emotions and are feeling overwhelmed they may be unable to focus on their daily activities. They may not know what to do, in moments like this it is best to have a routine. Even for people who have mental disorders or even other disorders. It is good if they have a routine that they follow. The body remembers more than we give it credit for. Therefore, if you make it a point to follow a routine for a while. You will automatically end up following the same routine on even the toughest of days.

For people with certain disorders or even people who don’t have disorders. But are going through a hard time in their life.

Routine

It often gets difficult to pay attention to the details in their life and take care of themselves. If they have a routine it will become easier for them to take care of themselves and this will also result in the maintenance of their emotions. It will help them deal with the other stressors in their life.

Nobody likes to enter their room and see it messy or enter their kitchen and see a pile of dirty dishes left to be washed and just like this there are other matters that may differ from person to person and may affect them in more ways than one.

If someone has a schedule and makes their bed as they wake up and cleans their room before going out somewhere and doing the dishes the moment they are done using them. They will not have to feel any unpleasant emotions later. Similarly, in other areas of their life as well if they deal with things in a certain manner when it is due then they will not feel burdened by excess emotions of unpleasantness.

Routine and Mental Health

Having a routine can be extremely beneficial as then one need not worry about the small details in life. Since the body also tends to remember routine, it will make it easier for them to go through the daily activities in their lives even in their hardest of moments.

Especially for people with certain mental illnesses wherein their everyday life gets affected and it feels extremely hard to work. The small details in life for example making your bed or even taking a shower, individuals with a routine life will find it slightly easier to do the tasks as compared to others since they are used to following a certain schedule. Which is stuck in their heads as well as is remembered by their body. It is important to realise that although having a routine can not take away any stressors and make your life better instantly. It can aid in managing ones emotions and in carrying out everyday tasks that one needs to engage in.

There are multiple different ways in which the everyday lives of people fold out and everybody has their own different ways of living. Everyone has their own kind of routine and what may work for them. It may not necessarily work for others. Therefore, everyone needs to have a routine that works best for them and it is important to have a routine as it makes everyday activities easier. It reduces the number of stressors In the individual’s life. There are various benefits of having a routine life. It is important that we all try to have a certain routine in our life that helps us in our everyday lives.

Reena is a young mother of Ahaan, a three year old who was recently diagnosed with autism by a psychologist. While struggling to come to terms with her child’s diagnosis and its implications she often feels stressed out with Ahaan’s frequent melt downs and aggressive behaviors. Aftab is the father of Jamal, a lively seven year old against whom there are several complaints from school of lying, cheating, stealing and recently playing with matchsticks at school. Being a single parent almost since Jamal’s infancy, he felt guilty, frustrated and inadequate when the school counsellor opined that Jamal has symptoms of Conduct disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder [ODD]. Aftab was devastated. Vikas was the darling of his parents and grandparents at home.

He was always a handful to manage, but it was not till teachers expressed their concerns that he would not sit in his class, he was not writing his notes, not reading, always disturbing others and clowning in class. When his paediatrician adviced them to consult a psychologist for ADHD symptoms leading to a possible Learning disability, parents expressed shock, anger and disbelief and argued that there was nothing wrong with the child and the issue was unnecessarily blown out of proportion.

Childhood Behavioral Challenges with Proactive Solutions

Nowadays a lot of children are increasingly being diagnosed for autism, ADHD, ODD, Conduct disorder and Learning disorders and referred for intervention. Relevant therapies and treatments are available for parents in order to alleviate the symptoms. Childhood is the crucial time, which offers a window of opportunity to correct any dysfunctional or inappropriate behaviors. Unfortunately, many parents feel that either there is no problem with their child or that these issues will resolve as the child grows, not realising that they are losing precious time when a course- correction is certainly possible. Typically, parents go through the cycle of disbelief, anger, sadness before they come to a stage of acceptance and come to terms with the issues and work on them proactively towards a solution.

Instead of getting overwhelmed by the diagnosis, parents will do well to focus on what is their role in modifying the aberrant behaviors and leave the diagnosis [‘labeling’ which is so abhorrent to parents] to professionals. It is important for parents to understand the concept behind the term not merely the name of the term. For instance, as a parent of a child diagnosed with ADHD they have to understand that basically this means that there are delays or disabilities in three important areas: I) lack of impulse control II) over activity and restlessness iii) inattention. Alternatively, that Autism is a social communication disorder; Learning disorder refers to difficulties in language processing and expression leading to scholastic backwardness; in Conduct disorders, children are frequently influenced by immediate rewards and escape opportunities and their restless behavior seems linked in nature to the impulsive behavior and poor inhibition.

Functional Nature and Collaborative Role of Parents:

Emphasize the functional nature of behavior. Usually, repeated commands, verbal reprimands and correction are commonly directed at children to correct behavior, however, when these same children are well behaved their parents give fewer rewards for compliance and initiate fewer verbal interactions.

So, the first step for parents would be to accept that their child might be having a condition in which they can play a major role at home as well as be co-partners in mainstreaming her at school and in society. Otherwise, there is a strong possibility that the child’s condition may deteriorate, leading to ostracism from peers and negative responses from family members and others.

Parents need to find out as much as they can about the child’s diagnosis and should not hesitate to ask the professionals what the diagnosis means in actual behaviors.

By showing interest and acceptance they will get cooperation from teachers, professionals and others in the child’s life. Parenting is not an easy job and there is a saying “It takes a village to raise a child”. They should learn to enlist help of family, friends and colleagues when overwhelmed and take professional help themselves when stressed by the child’s condition.

Second, they need to look for patterns in the child’s and their own behaviors and reactions and examine beliefs about parenting. They should look for triggers for the child as well as themselves to avoid falling in the trap of dysfunctional behaviors repeatedly.

Also Read: How to take care of children with disabilities?

Third, how can a parent mould behavior? By constantly complaining, grumbling, talking negatively or comparing the child with others, the situation may deteriorate further. Do they have to constantly beg and cajole him to do as required? Do they give him too many choices which he can exploit and wriggle out of? For eg if she is asked ‘Do you want to brush your teeth?’ it is very likely to be met with a ‘NO! I won’t’ but if she is calmly told ‘I want you to brush your teeth now’ and look as if it is expected to be done, there is at least a 50% chance she (albeit unwillingly) will do it.

Parenting Strategies

If it is necessary to offer choices, give two sensible ones eg ‘Would you like potato or beans in your curry?’ rather than ‘Do you want icecream or sandwich now?” and hope that he will exercise the latter; but mostly likely he may want the former and that will leave the parent feeling frustrated and angry. Give commands that focus on behavior that the child has to do now, not later. For example, rather than instructing a child to, “feed the dog after you eat breakfast”, tell her “feed the dog now, please”. Once that is done, you can praise her for it and ask her to wash and come for breakfast. As part of the command, include short and valid reasons why the child is to do something.

Also Read: Behavioural Disorders in Children

Make sure the child is oriented and observing. Get reasonably close to the child, use the child’s name, establish eye contact, clearly label or describe the required behavior [i.e., operationalize] and present short instructions that have a few steps ( ‘chunking’).

Use praise liberally when the child complies and this should start the moment he starts to follow directions. Do not wait till the task is completed. Name the desired behavior (or the outcome of the behavior] and present praise with a visible positive emotion. Parents should smile and use a nice physical touch if they want. Do not praise in an angry, sarcastic or insulting manner and do not diminish the reinforcing effect by saying something like: “You were really polite when we ate supper; why were you so rude at breakfast?” For parents who like to lecture, it helps to know that for ADHD children extra narrative and detail can reduce comprehension and performance.

Positive Parenting and Behavior Management

Use corrective procedures such as “Time Out” and “Loss of privileges” or “Compensating judiciously”. Do not yell, threaten or beat the child, however much you feel provoked. This only worsens the child’s already threatened self esteem and can start a spiral of violent and abusive behavior which can easily spin out of control. Timeout is a complex procedure that is least understood, highly misused and quickly discarded as ineffective, unfortunately! Consequences for noncompliance are an essential part of the treatment protocol along with parents being calm, in control, consistent and authoritative. Withholding toys or playtime for non-compliance for inappropriate behaviours can act as a deterrent against future misbehaviours. Parents need to “pick their battles”, and to observe the rule for praising desirable behaviors versus corrective strategies in the ratio of 2 is to 1 so that they can guide the child positively towards the desired behaviors.

Finally, encourage patience and acknowledge that mistakes are inevitable. Cooperate with the psychologist or therapist for best results. Ask for periodic reviews to see if you are on the right track and the child is progressing in the right direction. There are no short cuts and it can often take you months or years, but the rewards are well worth the efforts.
