I have started a 100day real food challenge at work. We start on July 1st. I have been trying really hard the last week and have done really good. Last night was a crazy day and went to Arby’s…BAD CHOICE!!! I felt horrible and very burpy (the pretend food tasted alot better going down than haunting me for 3 hours after)

Carolyn, thank you for sharing your story. There are many others out there who go through the same thing. Once we become adults, we are in control of what we eat. It’s never too late to start changing some habits, even if done in small steps. :) – Nicole

My mother cooked all of our food. We were fed vegetables, meat, and sometimes homemade bread or sweets. We were offered choices but never offered an opportunity to “overeat”. Growing up I had very little interest in food. Fast forward to college, in my 4 years I gained 20 lbs…probably not a big deal because I was 5’6 and went in weighing about 115. But fast forward again to making and eating my own foods. Suddenly I realized…not only could I eat a cake, I could buy one at a bakery with that yummy gritty sugary frosting. I am now 55, and have spent my entire adulthood fighting an addiction to sugar as powerful as people describe nicotine. My older brother is the same. My two younger brothers – 6 years below me and with a more relaxed mom and dad – have always maintained good weight and health. I’m not blaming, just reporting my story. If I blame anyone, it’s ME. ME for sure! But what do you think about this?

Being obese increases your risk of several conditions, hfcs is the “sugar” used in most sweets and it also promotes obesity… It tricks your liver into storing more fat, basically. I do think every once in a while wouldn’t hurt but it probably depends how often you get invited to parties lol. Also… Sugar is highly addictive and if they are doing some kind of cleanse, even one cheat csn throw things off.

Diabetes isn’t from sugar, typ two sometimes is from obesity but also genetic.

I find your recipes great and I completely understand the struggle as a parent and as an individual, to reduce the amount of junk food consumed. It is difficult to find a balance, especially when we are bombarded with unhealthy food choices on a daily basis and quite often can be ridiculed for our personal choices and how we chose to raise our families (as per some comments posted). Thank you for being a strong voice out there, living in a way that promotes healthy living and (most importantly) a way that you like to live. Furthermore, thank you for taking the time to share it with all of us, whether everyone agrees with your opinions or not doesn’t matter. You have made changes in my family’s life (and I can only imagine many others) and I thank you for that. My kids love many of the recipes on your website, as do I.
